Arthur Rimbaud
The French poet

Exposition
RIMBAUDMANIA
The eternity of an icon
7 May - 1 August 2010
City of Paris
France

The exhibition
Proposed by Claude Jeancolas in association with the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris, the Rimbaud Museum and the Media-center Voyelles in Charleville-Mézières, the hometown of the poet.

Within a century, Arthur Rimbaud has become one of the founder myths of modern culture. His style, his philosophy of life, his language have become models of behaviour, writing, thinking and a source of creation for a great number of artists all over the world.

RIMBAUDMANIA explores this unique phenomenon in literature and even outside literature.

Ten manuscripts of poetries and letters will be presented .
They come from very prestigious institutions as the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Bibliothèque royale de Belgique, the Rimbaud Museum and the Media center Voyelles from Charleville. Among others, the famous “Letter of the Seer” will be showed for the first time to the public. Also shown, masterworks by great masters like Picasso, Giacometti, Fernand Léger, Jim Dine….
Starting from the origins, rare manuscripts and photographs, the exhibition will follow the growth of the notoriety and the universal presence of Rimbaud, from the intellectual circles to the popular mass. Around 350 objects, works and documents will reveal the fields concerned: publishing, translation, illustration, comics, press, theatre, painting, sculpture, opera, classical music, rock and roll, fashion, advertising, decoration, the street art …until the final contemporary multimedia explosion.

An amazing collection
The audacity of this exhibition relies on the association of major arts and popular ones, masterpieces and ingenuous objects, the precious and the ordinary, the poetic and the prosaic, the branded and the anonymous….since Arthur Rimbaud do not divide  but unifies society. He is for everyone, intellectual or not, rich or poor, old or young. From this closeness springs up the strength of the universal myth.
Altogether, these elements constitute the biggest ephemeral collection about Rimbaud ever collected. The poet appears really as a fundamental actor of our culture. Every generation renews the vision and thus adapt the message to our changing world, diverse but always meaningful, surely different of what Rimbaud could have imagine.
